Training
Becoming an instructor
Teaching is a profession. Three ratings are prepared with us: flight instructor FI(A), class rating instructor CRI and instrument rating instructor IRI.
The FI(A) course comprises one hundred and twenty-five hours of theory, a pre-entry flight test, twenty-five hours dual and five hours of mutual flying. The shorter CRI and IRI courses build on the twenty-five hours of Teaching & Learning, credited to anyone already holding an instructor rating.
Flight instructor — FI(A)
The course teaches elementary instruction: classroom and airborne pedagogy, demonstrations, student and safety management. Mutual flying — two instructor candidates training each other — is an integral part of the programme.
Training is flown on the Sonaca 200 or Diamond DA40. Several of our current instructors came through it.
CRI and IRI
The CRI teaches class rating instruction, single- or multi-engine, for pilots already experienced on the class. The IRI teaches instrument flight instruction; its practical programme is reduced for FI(A) holders.
An instructor refresher seminar is organised every year — it appears on the session schedule.
